Questions and answers
Frequently asked questions
Straight answers to the questions I'm asked most about websites, costs, Google, photography and working together.
Working with me
Who is behind Rooted Web?
Rooted Web is me, Charlotte McConnell, a web designer and photographer based in Llandrindod Wells. I plan, design, build and photograph every project myself, so you always deal with the person doing the work.
Where do you work?
I'm based in Llandrindod Wells and work with businesses across Powys and Herefordshire in person, including Builth Wells, Hereford, Ledbury and Ross-on-Wye. I work with clients elsewhere in the UK online. See the areas I cover.
Do we need to meet in person?
Not unless you'd like to. Many clients prefer to meet at their premises, especially for photography, but everything else can be done by email and video call.
How do I get started?
Email hello@rootedweb.co.uk or use the contact form with a little about your business and what you need. I'll reply to arrange a chat and then send an itemised quote.
Websites
How much does a small business website cost?
Most small business websites from a UK freelancer cost between £500 and £4,000, with studios and agencies often starting around £3,000. You'll also have small running costs for your domain, hosting and email. My guide to what a website really costs explains it in detail.
Which website platform will you use?
It depends on what your site needs to do and how much you want to manage yourself. I'll recommend the right fit after we've talked. My comparison of WordPress, Squarespace, Wix and Shopify explains the trade-offs.
Will I be able to update my website myself?
Yes. I build sites so you can change text, photos, prices and opening hours yourself, and I'll show you how before launch.
Will I own my website and domain?
Yes. Your domain should be registered in your name, and once the project is paid for, the website, words and photos are yours. I make sure you have the logins for everything.
Can you redesign my existing website without losing my Google rankings?
Yes. I map your old page addresses to the new ones and set up permanent redirects, so visitors and search engines are sent to the right place.
Do you build Welsh and English websites?
Yes. Bilingual sites need translation and two versions of each page, so they're best planned from the start.
Search, Google and AI
Can you get my business to the top of Google?
Nobody can honestly guarantee that. Google states that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and that you can't pay for a better local ranking. What I can do is get everything within your control right: your Google Business Profile, reviews, website content and technical setup.
What is local SEO?
Local SEO is everything that helps your business show up when people nearby search for what you do, especially in Google Maps. It covers your Google Business Profile, reviews, your website and mentions on other local websites. Read more about local SEO.
Will my website show up in AI search tools?
AI tools and Google's AI summaries draw on clear, accurate information that's easy to find. I build sites with plain answers to common questions, structured data that describes your business, and consistent details across the web, which gives them the right facts to work with.
Photography and branding
Do you take the photos for my website?
I can. Brand photography is the other half of what I do, so I can photograph you, your place and your products on location and plan the shoot around where the photos will be used.
Can I use your photos on social media and in print?
Yes. You'll get clear permission to use the photos on your website, social media, printed materials and Google Business Profile.
Do you design logos and printed materials?
Yes. I design logos, colour palettes, business cards, leaflets, brochures and signage, and supply print-ready files. More about branding and print.
